No, Baghdad isnt burning. I'm talking about the blog. Baghdad Burning is a blog written by a 25 year old Iraqi woman in war torn Baghdad, Iraq writing under the pseydonym of RiverBend. RiverBend gives eyewitness accounts of the everyday realities on the ground, with astute analysis on the politics behind these events.
According to the Feminist Press, Riverbend recounts stories of life in an occupied city – of neighbors whose home are raided by U.S. troops, whose relatives disappear into prisons, and whose children are kidnapped by money-hungry militias. The only Iraqi blogger writing from a woman's perspective, she also describes a once-secular city where women are now afraid to leave their homes without head covering and a male escort.
Baghdad Burning got the award of the best middle eastern blog award for 2006. The blog is also in paperback found here. Also, the book made the shortlist for BBC's prestigious Samuel Johnson's prize for non-ficiton.
